Black-clad demonstrators, mostly part of Britain’s large Nigerian diaspora, held signs reading “End SARS, end police brutality” and sang “Buhari is a dead man” as they made their way through the streets of the capital. Others waved Nigerian flags, with some splashed with red paint to make them look bloodstained, while some wore green and white masks and sho...

Full Text Of Buhari’s Address To Nigerians On The #EndSARS Protests

Image
Fellow Nigerians, It has become necessary for me to address you having heard from many concerned Nigerians and having concluded a meeting with all the Security Chiefs. 2. I must warn those who have hijacked and misdirected the initial, genuine and well-intended protest of some of our youths in parts of the country, against the excesses of some members of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). 3. On Monday 12th October, I acknowledged the genuine concerns and agitations of members of the public regarding the excessive use of force by some members of SARS. 4. The choice to demonstrate peacefully is a fundamental right of citizens as enshrined in Section 40 of our Constitution and other enactments; but this right to protest also imposes on the demonstrators the responsibility to respect the rights of other citizens, and the necessity to operate within the law. 5. As a democratic government, we listened to, and carefully evaluated the five-point demands of the protesters. And...

SOPHIE BOUILLON / AFP Buildings were torched in Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos on Wednesday as authorities shut down the economic hub after the shooting of peaceful protesters by security forces caused international outrage. At least 12 people were killed by the Nigerian army and police in two locations in Lagos on Tuesday in a deadly crackdown on demonstrations, Amnesty International said. Peaceful protesters had gathered despite a curfew imposed to end spiralling protests over police brutality and deep-rooted social grievances. “Evidence gathered from eyewitnesses, video footage and hospital reports confirm that between 6:45 pm (1745 GMT) and 9:00 pm (2000 GMT) on Tuesday, October 20, the Nigerian military opened fire on thousands of people,” Amnesty said in a statement. The Lagos governor at fi...

#EndSARS: Buhari Addresses Nigerians, Keeps Mute On Lekki Shootings

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari has broken his silence on the ongoing #EndSARS protests across the country. In his less-than 15-minute long address on Thursday, the President assured the protesters that their voices have been heard ‘loud and clear’ and urged them to discontinue their demonstrations, saying ‘we are responding’. The President, however, kept mum on the shootings by soldiers in the Lekki Toll Gate area of Lagos State, an issue many had expected him to address. He spoke on everything else from the dissolution of the controversial (SARS) unit at the centre of the protests, to some steps being taken to meet the five-point demands of protesters, police reforms, the involvement of the international community and poverty alleviation initiatives targetted at the youth and other vulnerable groups in society. “No Nigerian Government in the past has methodically and seriously approached poverty-alleviation like we have done,” the President said.
